I had to take four photos to fit the whole tree in and merged them in Photoshop. Then I had to use another picture to put me and my daughter in the shot so you can get a better idea of just how huge this tree is.

I got the trial version of AutoDesk SketchbookExpress when I recently bought my new Intous 4, yay! A new tablet finally. My Intous 2 had a long and happy life of about 5 years. It still works, but has kind of been on the fritz. I bought an Intous 3 a while back and had issues with it when drawing in Flash, so I returned it and decided to put up with my old tablet. I'm happy to say, the Intous 4 is totally awesome; at least so far. It came with this trial software; pretty much a bunch of junk except for Sketchbook. I think it's a better application for sketching than Photoshop. I can't really put my finger on why, but it just seems to be more suited for sketch work.
I'm not very good at digital painting as you can see, but it's still fun.

I think the best thing an artist can do is to learn from as many other artists, people, and life experiences as possible while still retaining who they are. It's not about learning to draw like someone else. I've tried that for years now and it just doesn't work. It's about learning to be the best you that you can be by learning the basic principles that make artists great: imagination, patience, virtue, charity, faith, knowledge, and most of all discipline.

I started with the intent of making this guy into a superhero, but then he turned into a construction worker, so I guess he's a villain. Major Construction - bent on destroying nature.
This is greensleeves. She's your environmentalist hero. Out to save the world from evil land developers. Major Construction is her arch nemesis.

Self Portrait

This self portrait has been a lot of fun. I may refine it more later and possibly add some color, but I'm pretty happy with it for now. It's definitely got some flaws, but so does my mug.

I did this project with watercolors. It really helped me loosen up to use watercolors instead of pens, plus they're really fun to work with. These are arranged from top to bottom based on the ones I thought were the most successful. The one at the very top was the one I turned in.

X-Box Playing Elf

OK, something about my scanner makes my images look absolutely horrible! I'm going to have to find a better way to get these onto my computer. I used Photoshop to touch this image up, somewhat redeeming it from it's terrible looking scan. (see below) This was an assignment for the Character Design class I'm in where we had to fit a character into a shape we drew. I had my wife give me random instructions on what I had to fit into each shape. It was a challenge, but I came up with a lot of fun drawings. Hopefully, I can get the others up soon as well.

We only need to turn in one, but we have a whole week to work on them, so I'm going to do a ton of these. It's way fun and a very good learning experience.

Wobbles (the two footie) is based on our little 6 month old daughter, Alyssa. It's just a silly name my wife gave her because she's just over 2 feet tall and wobbles when she stands. I want to turn her into a superhero of some sort. I'm not sure what her superpower will be, maybe super cuteness.

My blog is full of sub-par images right now. I've figured out one of the major pieces that is missing from my artwork; time investment. I've gotten really discouraged in the past when looking at other artists' blogs. Time to prove to myself that I can create great art too if I just put in the time. This is not much more than a basic sketch with a quick value study right now, but I plan to make this into a very nice piece over the next several weeks.

Upon closer investigation the silly Earth scientists discovered that nebulas are actually giant gas demons. This one was recently named the Soul Troll nebula. As you can see, he has been busy gobbling up some yummy souls.

I can't take complete credit for these designs; Tarl Lambson, who worked with me for a while, helped in the creation of these. We did these designs for an annual event held by the Immaculate Conception church. They were very nice and professional people; a client I hope to work with again.

Light Snack Colored

I have to give most of the credit for this image to Daniel Gileadi, an aspiring and very promising Flash artist. I handed the sketch over to him, which he cleaned up and colored in Flash. I made some slight modifications and did some final touch-ups in Photoshop. I'm pretty pleased with the end result here. It's sort of a hybrid of vector and pixel art. I want to do a soft rendering of this just using Painter and Photoshop, but this is a good start.

I'm terrified and fascinated by sharks. As a young boy, I loved to read books about the different kinds of sharks and draw pictures of them. One of my greatest fears is of the ocean. It's not just sharks, simply thinking about all the things that could be in the water around me that I can't see freaks me out.

I designed this elephant to be used in an animated e-card. He's going to walk into frame, leaving cracks in the ground with each step. When he gets to his final position, he'll look at the viewer, wave, and say "Thanks a Ton!" The user can then put in a custom message and send it to a friend.

Craigslist

I browse craigslist.com occasionally to look for potential clients. I've been amazed by the number of people out there who think that artists will be willing to work for free. Sure, there's always a promise of great rewards and fame, but that don't feed the cat, does it?

I posted this image under a bogus job listing in hopes that some of the people posting jobs like this would realize how ridiculous it is. Sadly, my post only lasted a day before it was flagged. I guess it's OK to try manipulating artists into un-paid labor, but not OK for artists to comment on that practice?!
